Evaluation
For the Exterior location Brief I chose to photograph Landscape. My objectives in this assignment were to capture a variety of different ways of showing, detail, contrast, creative view points, light, and depth of field.
I began the assignment by taking some test shots whilst I was visiting centre Parcs and the images I produced were of woodland trees, and toadstools. I then studied a variety of photographers such as 'John Sexton', Paul Hart and 'Wolf-Gang Moersch' to gain some insparation. I then looked at how I could develop my own unique style and strengthen my technique.
My second selection of images were taken at Tatton Park. I photographed a variety of different areas of the park. I focused on positioning the camera in unusual angles to create interest eg; high and low veiw points. I also began to include other photographic skills such as depth of field, I did this by altering the aperture to a 'wide aperture'.
I then produced images that focused on particular parts of Landscape eg: leaves and Toadstools. The reason I chose to photograph in this way was to show detail in my images, this style is included in work produced by John Sexton. One of Sextons images is called 'fern on log'which I have discussed in the assignment and has focused on a section of fern that has been photographed to show fine detail of its leaves.
During this assignment I also I wanted to include contrast in my Images. many of the Photographers work that I have studied show good examples of contrast. I found that to use sunlight was important when creating good contrast . Many of the images I have produced are taken of trees and by positioning the camera so the light falls behind helped to create a contrast effect.
One other important part of photographing landscape was to create an interesting veiw point. Some of the work produced by Wolf- Gang Moersh show creative styles of positioning the camera to allow the subject in the photograph to stand out eg woodland trees, and other parts of landscape. In the work I have produced for the assignment I have also looked at creative veiwpoints. One example of this was taken of a pine tree where I positioned the camera facing upwards, this image has been used in my final piece of work. I also photographed toadstools by placing the camera from a low view point, this technique makes them look enlarged.
I then focused on using light in my images. Many of the photographers I have researched have used light creativly in their work.Whilst studying various photographers in this assignment I have found that using light in the correct way helps to create mood tone and atmosphere. In some of my final Images I took of woodland landscape I have captured the sunlight falling through the trees which has created warmth and atmosphere. I also photographed in the early morning which worked well as the landscape was foggy and surrounded the trees, this gave the Image a moody effect.
Overall I enjoyed the assignment and felt I strengthened many photographic skills. If I was given the chance to do a re-shoot I would have taken more photographs of the pinewood forest that I took during the early morning. The photograph portrayed good atmosphere due to the mist that surrounded the tree trunks, however I felt the composition could have been stronger.
I would have also used a tripod during some of the photography as some images resulted in camera shake.
