Studio Photography Evaluation

                                                   Evaluation

At the start of the Studio Lighting Assignment the first task was to complete some Images using a range of studio lighting accessories. I photographed different colleages in my group and experimented with different lighting tecnhniques.

The first Image was taken using an Umbrella which was placed to the righthand side of the model. The lighting in this photograph was very harsh on the models face this style of lighting has almost drained the colour from her face. If I was to photograph the model again I could try using a softer light such as a softbox or I could have altered the strength of the light.

The photograph taken of the second model worked well as he stands out, I used continious lighting. however the light was also very bright and caused a slight shadow in the background. If I was to take this photograph again I could have altered the position and the brightness of the lighting to avoid shadows, I could have also focused closer into the face to enhace detail.

The last Image was taken using using a softbox. I felt this Image worked well as the black backrop and the clothing the model is wearing is lit well. The contrast of the colourful Tatoos on the models arms add character to the Image. If I was to take this photograph again I could have moved closer to the models face or experimented with creating shadows around the models face.

For the second part of the assignment I produced five Images that had been taken during the taught sessions. The topic of the first Image was Film Noir , I enjoyed using this particular style of lighting as I was able to experiment with different techniques. I finally produced an Image that gave a soft lighting effect on the models face which I found very flattering. If I was to take this photograph again I would have tried highlighting the face from another angle to produce more shadows around her cheek bones, this may have allowed her face to stand out more under the hat she is wearing.

The Second photograph for this task was taken of a Rose. I chose to photograph a Rose as I wanted to experiment with shadows. The Image worked well and the lighting enhanced the white petals on the flower. In this photograph I positioned the lighting to create a small shadow undernethe the Rose which helped it stand out and create form. If I produced the same Image again I could have used coloured gels which may have created a nice effect against the white petals.

The third photograph was taken of a pair of childs boots. The reason I chose to photograph Boots was that I felt they were an interesting subject, I also felt they would stand out under the lighting and produce a contrast against the white background. When I produced this photograph I positioned the lighting so the detail on the boots would stand out. If I was to produce this Image again I could have photographed the boots froma different angle .

The forth photograph was taken of a silver necklace. This Image worked well, and I used a Macro Lens to highlight detail. The lighting also worked well in the photograph as the silver stood out against the dark tones in the background. If I was to take this photograph again I could have used a large peice of Jewellery. I could have altered the lighting by positioning it to fully enhance the Jewellery, and capture all reflections of diamonds.

The final Image was taken of a glass bottle, I used a Beauty Dish for this Image and coloured gels. The photograph worked well as the green glass contrasted against the colourful background. If I was given the chance to take this photograph again I could have positioned the bottle in a more interesting way and used the lighing more creatively to capture reflections of the glass.

The Portrait Image was taken using Rembrant lighting and was an Image I enjoyed creating. The lighing used was a softbox and Barndoors. For this photograph I wanted to portray a cold and harsh atmosphere. I positioned the lighting to shade one half of the models face this style creates mood. If I took this photograph again I could have used the lighting to create a darker shadow on the face, I could have also used a black backdrop which may have given the Image more of a dark/harsh dramatic style.

The Still life photograph was taken of eggs placed into a frying pan. The lighing used was a Softbox and Barndoors. I chose to photograph this particular subject as I found it was an interesting subject.Using correct lighting was essential in this photograph as the subject could have look dull. I took the photograph again and used one soft box which worked better.

studio photography Assignment Still Life task 3

Still Life

For the Still Life Task I have photographed Eggs which have been placed into a frying pan. The subject will be photographed from various angles and the lighting will be placed in different positions to highlight the eggs and create a vibrant look.

The first photograph taken I used two Softboxes and Barndoor lighting however the subject looks too bright and no shadows have formed around the eggs. The colour of the eggs have also been drained out by the intensity of the light. I have taken the photograph again but used different lighting.

The photograph below shows a plan of the lighting used for this Image. A soft box was positioned downwards towards the subject and Barndoors lighting was also positioned towards the black backdrop. Barndoors lighting has been used again in this Image which are useful to  direct the light towards the subject and help create form and contrast round the eggs. The softbox gives the photograph a soft overall light. The Image has been lit so that detail around the egg shells can be picked up in the photograph.

This Photograph was taken by a photographer called Annabelle breaky. This Image inspired me to produce a still life photograph of eggs placed into frying pan. The egg that has been cracked open gave me the idea to do he same however I have taken my photograph closer.

Studio Photography Assignment Portrait task 3

                                                           Task 3 Portrait

For the final Portrait Image I will use a Rembrant lighting technique. This can be achieved by using one light and a reflector or two lights. This is a popular style of lighting as it is capable of producing Images which appear both natural and compelling with minimum equipment. This particular style of lighting was named after the painter "Rembrant" as this was the lighting he used in many of his paintings.

For the first photograph I have used a white background and used two forms of lighting. A Softbox and Barndoors which were positioned to the right hand side of the model. By positioning the lighting in this way my aim was to produce a shadow effect on one side of the face. The reflection of the light helps to form the structure of the face and add character to the photograph. I have also changed the Image to black and white to create contrast. The Image works well however if I took the photograph again and create a stronger contrast of lighting on the models face, this will produce a more dramatic lighting effect. I will also experiment with a different backdrop and use black to see if this helps to create better shadows.

The photograph bellow shows the lighing position.A Softbox has been placed to the right hand side of the room and barndoors have been positioned in a similar place.By using Barndoors I was able to direct the light more accurately towards the models face.  The key to creating a Rembrant lighting technique, is to ensure one side of the face is lit well by the light while the other side of the face uses interaction of shadow and light.

This Image shows a good example of how Rembrant lighting has been used, a strong contast has been formed on the models face.
Rembrandt Lighting Diagram

This is another diagram of the lighting used for the Image of the woman above.  Rembrant lighting has been set up by using one key light and a reflector. The main light is directed towards the right hand side of the face and a reflector has been used to pick up more light.

Studio Photography Assignment Task 2

                                                   Studio Photography

I have selected five images that work well and demonstrate good examples of studio lighting.

The first Image was taken by using  softbox lighting with a white background. The lighting was High key which gives the models skin colour a pale effect.

The lighting was set up by using two soft boxes placed infront of the model (250 watt each light), with additional lighting at each side of the model (500 watt each light)
The model is lit well and a small shadow behind works well with the image.

The Image has been altered to black and white which works better visually and adds character to the photograph.

The second Image is a still life photograph taken of a Rose. The lighting used was two backlights one Barndoors lighting and a Honeycomb, I also used a reflector at the front of the subject. The Rose has been lit more brightly from the left hand side which has created more form around the flower and shadows have formed around the petals. A second shadow has been created under the flower which allows it to stand out more against the white backdrop.

The third Image was taken of a pair of childs Boots. The Boots have been photographed on a white background with a piece of bark placed behind them. The lighting I have used in this Image is similar to the photograph of the Rose. Two backlights were placed behind the subject, Barndoors and Honeycomb.By using Barndoors in this photograph light could be directed towards the subject. A Honeycomb grid was used to create more directional light which gives more control and greater isolation.

The forth Image was taken of a piece of silver jewellery. The necklace was placed over a collection of leaves that had been found outside college. By placing the necklace over the dark leaves has enhanced the silver. The lighting used for this photograph was a Beauty Dish and Barndoors lighting. A macro lens was used to capture the detail and the lighting was positioned to shine directly on the necklace to capture the sparkles of the diamonds.

The final Image has been taken of a glass bottle. The lighting that has been used for this Image was Barndoors and a Beauty Dish. The lighting was placed infront of the bottle from a diaganol angle. I used a Coloured gel to contrast against the green bottle.

Studio Photography Assignment Task 1

                                                     Studio Lighting

Studio Lighting is used by many photographers today and there are many different lighting effects that can be produced. I have listed some common lighting used.

Soft box

Above are examples of softboxes which are used as a type of photographic lighting device. All the various soft light types create even and diffused light by directing light through some material, or by bouncing light off a second surface to deffuse the light.

Umberella

An umbrella is a reflecter which is an improvised or specialised reflective surface used to redirect light towards a given subject or scene.

Snoot

In photography a snoot is a tube or similar object that fits over a studio light or portable flash and allows the photographer to control the direction and radius of the light beam. These may be conical, cylindrical, or rectangular in shape. Snoots can isolate a subject when using a flash. They help by stopping "light spill", or when lighting falls in a larger footprint than intended.

Beauty Dish

Above is an example of a Beauty Dish, this lighting uses a parabolic reflector to disribute light towards its subject which gives a wrapped contasted look and helps to

Honeycomb

Hproduce a dramatic effect.

Above is an example of a honey comb lightsource. This lighting is used to create directional light which gives you more control and greater isoation.

Practical work

At the start of the assignment I took photographs of my colleagues in the studio and I began to explore different techniques by using various studio lighting. The first example was taken by using one light source an Umbrella. The camera was set at F22 iso 200 160th of a second. The Ubmrella was placed to the right hand side of the model which has highlighted the face brightly. The lighting also looks hard, a softer light would have  worked better to flatter the model.

The second photograph was taken by using continuous lighting .The camera was set at f7.1 iso 200 .The lighting was placed just right of the model and gives a brighter effect in this photograph. The lighting has caused a shadow behind him which would also suggest the lighting is too bright.

The third photograph was taken by using a lightbox, the camera was set at 160th of a second f11 iso 200. The lighting works well against the black background the tatoos on the models arms are highlighted well and contrast against the backdrop. This Image may have worked better if it had been taken closer, this would have picked up on more detail of the model.
