The New Topographics

The New Topographics

The photographer that interests me the most is Simon Roberts. Simon studied a BA Hons Degree in Human Geography and graduated in 1996, and his work has been exhibited widely.

When looking at the images produced by Simon Roberts I find his work to be intriguing. He captures a variety of places and people around Britain naturally enjoying themselves in groups or alone.  I also find that Simon’s work is something we can all relate to as some of his photographs show families enjoying a picnic together, or groups of people relaxing on a beach.  The images produced by Simon are done on large scale which I find allows the viewer to feel almost inside the photograph.

One of the photographs that I found particularly interesting was” Ladies Day Aintree Racecourse Merseyside 4th April 2008”. The photograph shows nicely dressed men and women enjoying a day at the races however Simon has included empty beer bottles and rubbish which is in the foreground of the photograph. This reflects a more realistic image of a day out at the races. He also captures the different facial expressions of the public watching the horse race which is interesting to look at.
